1. The Speed, Distance and Time Formula Triangle

The relationship between speed, distance, and time is one of the most important formulas in physics and everyday life:

  • Speed = Distance ÷ Time
  • Distance = Speed × Time
  • Time = Distance ÷ Speed

A useful memory trick: draw a triangle with D on top, and S and T at the bottom corners. Cover the variable you want to find — the remaining two show the formula.

2. Real-World Examples

  • A car travels 120 miles in 2 hours. Speed = 120 ÷ 2 = 60 mph.
  • A runner at 8 km/h for 45 minutes. Distance = 8 × (45/60) = 6 km.
  • A plane at 500 mph must travel 2,500 miles. Time = 2500 ÷ 500 = 5 hours.

3. Unit Conversions

Always ensure speed and distance units match before calculating time. 1 hour = 60 minutes = 3600 seconds. 1 km ≈ 0.621 miles. 1 mile ≈ 1.609 km.
