1. How to Find the Average of a Set of Numbers
The arithmetic mean (average) is the sum of all values in a data set divided by the count of values. It is the most common measure of central tendency.
Formula: Average = Sum of all values ÷ Number of values
Example: The average of {85, 90, 78, 92, 88} = (85+90+78+92+88) ÷ 5 = 433 ÷ 5 = 86.6.
2. Weighted Average
When some values matter more than others, use a weighted average. Multiply each value by its weight, sum the products, then divide by the total weight. Example: an exam counts 60% and homework 40%: Weighted Avg = (85×0.6) + (90×0.4) = 51 + 36 = 87.
