Writing cosmic figures with dozens of trailing zeros is prone to transcription errors. Scientific notation formats numbers as a coefficient (1 ≤ a < 10) multiplied by 10ⁿ.

Arithmetic with Scientific Notation

To multiply, multiply coefficients and add exponents. To divide, divide coefficients and subtract exponents.

Multiplication: (3.0 × 10⁸) × (2.0 × 10⁴) = 6.0 × 10¹² | Division: (8.0 × 10¹²) ÷ (2.0 × 10⁴) = 4.0 × 10⁸

Significant Figures and Error Tracking

Scientific notation explicitly defines the number of significant digits, distinguishing measured accuracy from arbitrary placeholder zeros.

Example: 4.50 × 10³ indicates 3 significant figures of precision.
